DRUGS: What Kids Need to Know DVD

This student workshop defines a drug as any substance that changes the way your brain and body work. Students learn the benefits of medicines when taken properly, the dangers of using tobacco, alcohol and marijuana, and easy ways to stand up for themselves in the face of peer pressure. Divided into five easy-to-use vignettes.

Medicine is a Good Drug - Gabbie's mom gives her medicine to fight off her earache. Michael offers Jake his cough medicine. Emily's older brother wants to take their father's pain medication. Kids see examples of when taking medicine is positive and when it's dangerous.

Tobacco is a Bad Drug - Nick's Uncle Jim has trouble climbing stairs because smoking cigarettes has affected his heart and lungs. Emily refuses Samantha's offer to smoke her grandma's cigarettes because she says they are unhealthy, make your teeth yellow and make you smell bad.

Alcohol - Luke and Michael get sick after secretly drinking beers at Luke's house. Luke's sister helps them understand how drinking can permanently damage their developing bodies and minds, and affect the way they act and feel.

Marijuana - Students learn about the serious consequences of taking the illegal drug, marijuana.

Stand Up For Yourself - Kids learn ways to resist peer pressure: don't get into a conversation; say it's not for you, and if the situation is dangerous, walk away.
