DERALD WING SUE SERIES ON RACISM (4 Programs)

Derald Wing Sue, Professor of Psychology and Education, Teachers College, Columbia University, presents an extraordinary new four-part series on racism. No matter what race or ethnic origin, viewers will take an honest appraisal of themselves, their biases and prejudices, and take steps to overcome racism. The programs in this series are:

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF RACISM: Where Have We Gone Wrong?
In this challenging video, Derald Wing Sue unmasks myths of racism that have prevented us from dealing realistically with our own complicity in the oppression of others. He provides facts, figures, research and everyday examples that are sure to cause consternation and discomfort in all of us. In one example, Dr. Sue argues it is not the Klan, Skinheads or other white supremacists who pose the greatest threat to people of color, but ordinary, well-intentioned people who believe in fairness, equality and justice. Sue discusses how our inactivity and passivity in dealing with our own racial hang-ups can perpetuate racism.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE WHITE? The Invisible Whiteness of Being
Based upon a series of interviews with whites and people of color, Dr. Sue asks a very straightforward question: What does it mean to be white? The variety of reactions is both provocative and powerful as they reveal how unaware and uncomfortable many white people are in answering the question. Why would many rather not think about their whiteness? Why are they uncomfortable with the question? Why do they deny its importance in affecting their lives?

OVERCOMING PERSONAL RACISM: What Can I Do?
Based upon testimony before President Clinton's Race Advisory Board, Dr. Sue suggests what each of us can do to overcome our personal racism. He extracts five basic principles: (1) learn about other races from sources within the 'other' group, (2) learn from healthy and strong people of that culture, (3) learn from experiential reality, (4) learn from constant vigilance of biases and fears, and (5) learn from being committed to personal action against racism.

SURVIVING RACISM: A Message to People of Color
Based upon Dr. Sue's new book on racism, Overcoming our Racism: The Journey to Liberation, this video speaks directly to the struggles, hopes, fears and strengths of people of color throughout their history to today. He asks people of color not to become discouraged and not to let blind hatred rule their lives. Communicated from a personal perspective, Dr. Sue outlines 16 lessons he has learned to help him survive racism, and even flourish despite its oppressive qualities.
