ONCOLOGICAL PAIN MANAGEMENT: Alternative Pain Management in Treatment (2 Programs)

In an effort to decrease the disease-related and treatment-related stressors on body functioning, an increasing number of cancer patients are seeking out and incorporating complementary approaches into their treatment plan. This series discusses for professionals such approaches and shows how they are utilized in their practice settings.

RELAXATION AND GUIDED IMAGERY
Cancer imagery aims to help reduce and relieve side effects and also to lessen the fear and stress of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. According to an article from the University of California, San Diego, a review of 46 studies conducted from 1966 to 1998 by the American Cancer Society found that guided imagery was effective in managing stress, anxiety, depression, pain, and the side effects of chemotherapy. Cancer guided imagery is recommended in conjunction with prescribed medical treatment, not as a stand-alone therapy. 23 minutes

THERAPEUTIC TOUCH
Although the word "touch" is part of the modality's name, physical touch is not necessary when practitioners offer a treatment. Another name for Therapeutic Touch is Non-Contact Therapeutic Touch (NCTT), giving it the moniker 'Distance Healing'. In a state of health, Life Energy flows freely in, through, and out of the field in an orderly manner. Disease or injury affects, obstructs, disorders, or depletes the flow of energy. Thereafter, Touch Practitioners attempt to influence the energy flow to restore the integrity of the field and move it toward wholeness and health. 16 minutes
