Various types of tubes are used to improve patient outcomes. This series discusses several of the most common: nasogastric, percutaneous endoscopic gastronomy, and endoscopic jejunostomy tubes; jackson Pratt, Hemovac, and Penrose drains: wound vacuums; needle decompression devices; and chest tubes.

NASOGASTRIC TUBES
Focuses on nasogastric or NG tubes. Discusses the rationale for their use, the procedure for placement in an awake, alert patient, and nursing assessments and interventions before, during, and after the insertion. 18 minutes

PERCUTANEOUS ENDOSCROPIC GASTRONOMY AND ENDOSCOPIC JEJUNOSTOMY TUBES
Focuses on percutaneous endoscopic gastronomy tubes (PEGS) and percutaneous endoscopic jejunostomy tubes (PEJs or J-tubes). The rationale for their use as well as the procedure for inserting them will be discussed and illustrated. Nursing assessments prior to, during, and after their placement as well as routine care of these tubes will be described through the use of scenarios. 16 minutes

SURGICAL DRAINS
Explores several types of surgical drains, focusing on the Jackson Pratt, Hemovac, Penrose, and wound vacuum. For each, the rationale for its use, nursing assessments, dressing changes, care and management of the drain, and potential complications are discussed using scenarios and art. 20 minutes

CHEST TUBES
Management of a pneumothorax is a medical emergency. This program describes the immediate intervention needed to a stabilize patient with a collapsed lung, needle decompression, as well as insertion of a chest tube. Rationale for placement, including a discussion of the pathophysiology associated with pneumo-, tension pneumo-, hemo-, and chylothorax as well as pleural effusion are explained. Equipment needed and nursing assessments before, during, and after the procedure are also explored. 24 minutes
