| ABO BLOOD GROUPS This program discusses the science behind the ABO antigens. Application of molecular biology techniques with regard to genetic analysis of ABO blood group systems is covered along with the importance of ABO systems in transfusions. After completing this activity, the participant should be able to: 1. list the four antigens of the ABO blood group system 2. state the significance of the D(Rh) antigen as it relates to transfusion 3. list each blood group and state the ABO antibodies expected to be present in the serum/plasma 4. describe the testing performed to detect the antigens and antibodies of the ABO blood group system 5. state the reason for death due to ABO incompatible blood transfusions 6. given an ABO/D blood type select the correct blood type for transfusion | ||||||||
