| COMPLEMENTARY CHILDCARE SERIES (10 Programs) DVD
Produced by the Discovery Health Channel, this series is for parents seeking knowledge and information on preventative medicine or, when conventional therapies don't work, alternative choices for their children who may be suffering from common health issues. Leading health practitioners review the experiences of children who have benefited from complementary therapy, to the extent that the treatment has helped to cure or to relieve their condition. There are ten 30-minute programs: BEHAVIORAL PROBLEMS Dr. Brian McDonough, a specialist in Nutritional Medicine, guides us through this program on new discoveries regarding behavioral problems in children. He explains how in ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, symptoms include inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Two cases are presented that demonstrate how sugar intake and vitamin deficiency can affect hyperactivity and behavioral problems. Complimentary therapies involving diet, kinesiology and developmental methods are presented that can help reduce or even replace Ritalin dependence in many cases. ALLERGIES Over the past 20 years allergies have increased dramatically, affecting a large number of school-age children. Dr. David Smallbone, M.D., guides us through this program that looks at health problems associated with allergies. Explores issues with lactose intolerance, immune system problems, asthma and eczema with complimentary therapies involving homeopathy and refelexology. .ANXIETY AND FEAR Avy Joseph, a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist, guides us through this program that looks at the most common psychological disorder in children and teens today, anxiety. Here we learn that anxiety and fear are feelings and emotions we may have in response to danger, either real or perceived, and that anxiety is a part of our natural development. When a child or teen feels anxiety or fear, what's happening is they are learning to expand their comfort zone, preparing for life later on. In cases of extreme or sustained anxiety, the brain can respond with dramatic physical reactions. Therapies proffered include the (Edward) Bach flower remedy system, acupuncture and hypnotherapy. ASTHMA Asthma Dr. John Briffa, a Nutritional physician and best selling author (Bodywise, Ultimate Health, and Natural Health for Kids), begins by discussing the impact of diet on asthma; also how an asthma patient's bronchial tubes constrict, making it difficult for the sufferer to breath out. Alternative therapies such as yoga, Bowen therapy, Magnet and Electronic Gem Therapy, homeopathy and diets are explained. AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS Paul Shattock, Director of Autism Research Unit at Sunderland University, guides us through this program on Autism Spectrum Disorders. Therapies described include diet, osteopathy and homeopathy. BIRTH TRAUMA - Dr. Stuart Korth, a Pediatric Osteopath, explains that birth trauma is assessed with the Apgar score, which is an index of a child's alertness and color at birth. Examples cited are Cerebral Palsy, which can be caused at anytime by any assault on the brain that reduces its blood supply, and that symptoms may vary from mild to severe, distress during birth, that cause babies tension and possible trauma, as well as symptoms following premature birth. Various osteopathic therapies are described. COUGHS AND COLDS Dr. Gill Jenkins, M.D, explains how a cold is a viral infection of the nasal passages of the nose and throat, and how antibiotics don't work on colds and coughs. Complimentary therapies explained include homeopathic, traditional Chinese medicine, electro-acupuncture, and color-puncture therapy. DYSLEXIA AND DYSPRAXIA Educational Psychologist Patricia Rouse guides us through this program. We learn that Dyslexia is a learning disability, specifically in reading and spelling, while children with Dyspraxia have difficulty being in space, holding a pencil; also math skills and sport skills are affected. Cited are uses of educational kinesiology, Neuro Development Therapy, and Auditory Integration and Syntonics. VACCINATIONS Dr. Peter Mansfield, M.D., guides viewers through this program that examines the on-going debate, to vaccinate or not. He explains what vaccines are, what the pros and cons are, and that the idea of a vaccine is to imitate the disease in such a way that a child gets the protection without real-life exposure. But in some cases the vaccines actually causes the disease instead. Fortunately, antibiotics, and a Homeopathic remedy can help. WEIGHT - Dr. Wynnie Chan, a Nutritionist and best selling author (Food and Diet Counter), guides us through this program that looks at weight and obesity. Health professionals are increasingly concerned about the problem of obesity, not only because of physical problems involved, but also for emotional problems as well. Naturopathy and proper nutrition information can outline healthier eating by limiting sugar and preservatives in the diet. And physical activity plays a major part as well. | |||||||
