What is the counseling intake process and how can mental health practitioners make it successful for the client? In Microtraining's first DVD on this subject, two distinctively different approaches to the intake session are demonstrated. In the first one, Brent Beam, works with a Trinidadian female who is experiencing sleep issues and feelings of discontent in her work and romantic relationship. In the second demonstration, Karolyn Sentor conducts an intake session with an Asian American male who has recently relocated to a new city and is grappling with issues of loneliness and loss of connection with family. The DVD begins with a brief lecture on the intake process by Dr. Beam, followed by the two intake demonstrations. It wraps up with a debriefing session led by a clinical supervisor (Craig Woodsmall, Psy.D.) and the therapists and clients. Diversity and cross-cultural counseling issues are emphasized.
