PHYSICAL GROWTH AND MOTOR DEVELOPMENT
Discusses patterns and norms of development, physical growth, particularly that of the brain, environmental factors that influence growth and development, and the typical sequence of development. 25 minutes

COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT
Discusses perception and then describes schemata and the research technique of habituation-dishabituation. Includes Piaget’s theories of object permanence and sensorimotor stage. Discusses memory and problem solving. Presents ways to facilitate a child’s cognitive development. 28 minutes

LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT
Discusses role of biology and environment in language development. Presents pre-language communication including turn-taking, "parentese", and intentional gestures by the child. Illustrates infant’s capabilities in language acquisition. Presents practical suggestions for enhancing a child’s language development. 29 minutes

EMOTIONAL AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
Briefly describes Erikson’s first two psychosocial stages, then examines biological dispositions such as smiling, babbling, and following an adult’s gaze. Discusses attachment, temperament, social responses such as stranger anxiety and separation anxiety, and the child’s growing self-awareness. 25 minutes
