| STUDY SKILLS II: Student Workshop
This hands-on study skills workshop follows up the first by teaching how to read a textbook, how to take notes from a book, and how to tackle a long-term project. Geared specifically to the needs of middle school students, this workshop lays the groundwork for success by showing how to develop a positive attitude, meet obligations to others when working on group projects, and plan ahead. Each of three easy-to-follow segments focuses on an important study skill. Highlighted first is reading. Using the SQ3R method, students discover the need to survey a chapter first, devise questions to focus their attention as they read, recite what they have read in their own words, and review. Strategies for good note-taking include writing down the main ideas, key words, vocabulary, dates, and names, using abbreviations, and noting the page numbers of the source the notes are taken from for easy cross-reference. Long-term projects feel less daunting to students when they follow the guidelines offered here for organizing their time and materials, gathering information and preparing their final project. ***Includes Teacher's Guide | |||||||||
