BELL HOOKS: Cultural Criticism and Transformation DVD

bell hooks...
Distinguished Professor of English, City University of New York, is the author of many books of commentary, criticism and autobiograhy.

Part 1 - ON CULTURAL CRITICISM
Carrying on with a further analysis of REPRESENTATIONS in the media, author and educator Bell Hooks argues that it is possible to acknowledge the impact of media, without denying our own agency or the pleasure we derive from popular culture. She suggests that 'criticism' be based not on freeing ourselves from the influence of representations, but on engaging with them consciously. We must become "enlightened witnesses". 26 minutes

PART 2 - DOING CULTURAL CRITICISM
Bell Hooks puts her critical faculties to work on a variety of popular culture representations including the movie HOOP DREAMS, the O.J. Simpson trial phenomenon, the careers of Madonna and Spike Lee, Gangsta Rap, plus the way that 'black females' are dealt with in the media. Developing an understanding of what is being presented does not necessarily require that you despise it. 40 minutes
