TREATING COMPLEX PTSD (2 Programs) DVD
This two part series aimed at clinicians explains the extra challenges associated with treating 'complex PTSD', defined as that resulting from repeated traumatization, occurring in childhood, inflicted by those who are supposed to be the source of safety and security. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk teaches viewers that refocusing the clients' attention, away from their misery and onto how things can be different, is necessary. Understanding that there may be a need for adjunctive therapies well outside the traditional mental health field is essential. Using EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) as a tool is discussed.
Part I - CLINICAL ISSUES (40 minutes) explores the core problems of survivors of childhood trauma and explains how therapists can help them to develop skills to better manage their lives.
Part II - STABILIZATION TECHNIQUES AND THERAPEUTIC MODALITIES (42 minutes) shows therapists how to help their clients 'have a life in the here and now'. Also discussed are EMDR, psychodrama, group therapy and body-oriented group work.
