CONFRONTING RACIAL AND GENDER DIFFERENCE: Three Approaches to Multicultural Counseling and Therapy DVD

Viewers will discover many of the issues underlying cross-racial and gender counseling and therapy. Unintentional racism, insight into client thought processes, and specific ideas for practice are provided in this challenging video. Starts with a focus on developing an open cross-cultural relationship and negotiating the goals of counseling.

The three approaches demonstrated here include:
1. Psychodynamic - A unique approach to unconscious thoughts and feelings
2. Existential/Humanistic - Person centered skills lead to a challenging discussion of the notion of "choice" and "responsibility"
3. Cognitive Behavioral - The client discusses her feelings of invisibility as a woman of color and the counselor uses stress management and problem solving skills that lead toward empowerment and greater life satisfaction through collective awareness

Features Brenda Cartwright, Michael D'Andrea, Judy Daniels, Counselor Education, University of Hawaii, Manoa.
