SHOCK: Electroconvulsive Therapy Series (3 Programs) DVD

This series reveals the personal stories of a dozen people who underwent electroconvulsive therapy for the treatment of severe depression or bipolar disorder. It features candid, intimate interviews with patients and healthcare professionals who discuss their experiences with this treatment modality which has been both derided as barbaric and praised as miraculous.

The series consists of three 21-minute programs:

Program One - INTRODUCTION
A brief overview of ECT is presented along with initial interviews with actual patients who have undergone ECT. Interviews continue with patients revealing the agony and helplessness they felt during episodes of severe depression.

Program Two - IN AND OUT OF THE CUCKOO'S NEST
An historical perspective on the influence motion pictures had on ECT in the 1970s and 1980s. In addition, there is information about artists and athletes who underwent this treatment. Interviews with modern patients continue.

Program Three
THE MYSTERY OF HOW AND WHY - Descriptions of the effects ECT has on brain physiology are discussed as are new "lower impact" techniques such as vagal nerve stimulation, transcranial magnetic simulation, and magnetic seizure therapy.
