This series consists of two programs:

RECOGNITION AND ASSESSMENT
Looks at the impact of mental health disorders on the individual's ability to provide self-care, on those providing care, and even on the economy worldwide. The concepts of stereotype and prejudice as related to mental health are discussed. Concerns and fears related to caring for mental health patients in the acute medical setting are identified and discussed. Steps in the assessment process to assist the health care worker in discovering the presence of mental health disorders are outlined. Utilizing the skills of the entire health care team is introduced. 24 minutes

EFFECTIVE INTERVENTION TECHNIQUES
Utilizes a scenario format to show effective methods of working with patients who are suffering from mental disorders while in the acute care environment. Simple techniques to promote safety and prevent patient or staff injury are outlined, as well as methods to maintain control of the situation when a patient is acting out. The program also shows some of the reasons mental health patients fail to follow treatment plans. Appropriate methods for supporting family members and eliciting helpful information from them are also illustrated, as is the role of the nurse as a facilitator of communication between the various members of the health care team. Restrictions on the use of restraints, both physical and chemical, are also addressed. Proper documentation of observed behaviors is discussed. 25 minutes
