CARDIAC DISORDERS: Heart Failure Series (2 Programs) DVD

This series consists of two programs:
HEART FAILURE: Part One
Discusses the definition and demographics of heart failure, including the common terms used to describe it. Next there is an overview of the many causes of heart failure. The pathophysiology of heart failure is then examined, using the Frank-Starling curve as a basis for understanding the relationship between stretched muscle length and strength of contraction. This is followed by a clinical scenario of a patient presenting for triage and describing a history and typical symptoms. Ends with an explanation of cardiac compensatory mechanisms. 16 minutes

HEART FAILURE: Part Two
In Part Two we examine the problem of decompensation, which occurs when the compensatory mechanisms can no longer be sustained and the heart fails. This demonstration is followed by a triage physical examination of a patient presenting to an ED with early symptoms of heart failure. Next there is a discussion of diagnostic techniques, including important laboratory studies and imaging modalities. The American Heart Association classification system for staging heart failure is then presented, finishing with a brief overview of current medical therapies for this condition. 12 minutes
