NEUROLOGIC ASSESSMENT SERIES (4 Programs) DVD
This series uses real-time footage of a healthcare professional performing the components of a complete neurologic examination.
MENTAL STATUS AND CRANIAL NERVE EVALUATIONS
Begins by describing various interviewing techniques that enable the provider to assess cerebral function. Methods include asking appropriate questions; listening to the patient's responses for both content and use of language; observing his or her body language. 23 minutes
REFLEX AND MOTOR EVALUATION
Begins by describing the reflex arc and primitive reflexes and then moves on to demonstrate how to assess and quantify reflex reactions in both the upper and lower extremities. The second part of the program focuses on a motor assessment, starting with a brief explanation of the functions of the upper and lower neurons. It then shows how strength in the hands, arms, feet, and legs is evaluated and measured using a standardized numeric scale. 18 minutes
CEREBELLAR FUNCTION AND SENSORY EVALUATIONS
Starts with a brief description of the functions of the cerebellum and then shows how to assess balance and coordination. The second part of the program begins with an explanation of the two types of sensory pathways as well as the significance of sensory dermatatomes. It consludes by demonstrating how to assess a patient's ability to discriminate among various sensory stimuli. 14 minutes
EVALUATING A PATIENT WITH DIMINISHED LEVEL OF CONSCIOUSNESS
Demonstrates specific techniques used to perform this type of examination. Begins by defining the terminology used to describe the continuum of consciousness from fully alert through coma and continues with a detailed explanation of the use of the Glasgow Coma Scale. Finally, this program then shows how to assess cranial nerves as well as reflex, motor, and sensory functions. 16 minutes
