VASCULAR ACCESS SERIES (5 Programs) DVD
This series focuses on some of the most common devices that are used for vascular access - peripheral IVs, peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC lines), peripheral arterial lines, and central lines with both external and internal ports.
PERIPHERAL IVs
Peripheral IVs are placed to deliver fluids, medications, and blood products. This program describes how to choose the proper equipment and the best site, prepare the site for the needle stick, secure the catheter in place, and observe for complications that may occur such as infiltration, thrombophlebitis, or extravasation. This material is presented in a scenario in which techniques are explained and patient education is featured. Graphics and photographs enhance demonstrations. In addition, S-BAR documentation is demonstrated. 17 minutes
PERIPHERALLY INSERTED CENTRAL CATHETERS
Describes peripherally inserted central catheters, or PICC lines. It begins with a brief discussion about the rationale for their use and continues with a scenario that explains patient preparation and post-procedure care. In addition, dressing changes and complications associated with these lines are explored. This case study, which takes place in an acute care setting as well as the patient's home, can be used for both healthcare professionals as well as patient education. 22 minutes
PERIPHERAL ARTERIAL LINES
Describes peripheral arterial lines, including rationale for their use, equipment needed for their cannulation, and pre- and post-placement assessments. In addition, setting a hemodynamic monitoring system will be both demonstrated and explained, with a focus on zeroing and calibrating the equipment as well as recognizing the different types of waveforms. 14 minutes
CENTRAL VENOUS ACCESS
This program will discuss two types of central venous catheters: those with external ports and those implanted beneath skin. The rational for the use of each type is explained using scenarios as well as art. In addition, routine flushing, accessing the line for medication administration, and dressing changes for the Hickman catheter are demonstrated. 25 minutes
CENTRAL VENOUS ACCESS BLOOD DRAW AND DRESSING CHANGE
This program provides a rapid demonstration of two common skills associated with the maintenance of a central venous access device: blood draws and dressing changes. 10 minutes
*The series has Closed-captioned and Scorm compliance.
