HIGH RISK OB (5 Programs) DVD

For many women, pregnancy is an uncomplicated nine months during which time they eagerly anticipate the birth of their baby; however, for some women, it can be a challenge. This series will focus on four women, from the time their pregnancies were confirmed through delivery, who face both physical and emotional circumstances which make them high-risk.

Susan, in her late thirties, has undergone two unsuccessful in-vitro procedures before becoming pregnant with triplets. Lindsay; a teenager who is prone to reckless behavior involving recreational drugs, alcohol, and smoking; is without support of family or friends. Melissa, in her mid-twenties, has had diabetes for years and must manage the effects her pregnancy has on her disorder. Jan, in her early thirties, is obese and hypertensive.

THE HIGH-RISK MOTHER: Part 1
Pregnancy is a joyous time; however, for some women, it can be nine months when their health and well-being are in jeopardy. "High Risk OB" will look at two women who have at least one pre-existing condition including older maternal age, infertility, multiple fetuses, and diabetes, that makes their pregnancies high-risk. Information about each pathology is explored and its impact on the pregnancy is explained. 19 minutes

THE HIGH-RISK MOTHER: Part 2
"High Risk OB" continues to look at common risk factors during pregnancy. Here, two other women with other co-morbidities, including obesity, hypertension, young maternal age, and substance abuse are described. 15 minutes

THE HIGH-RISK FETUS
The four women previously introduced all have pre-existing conditions including maternal age, infertility, multiple fetuses, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, young maternal age, and substance abuse - which make their pregnancies high risk. "High Risk OB" will focus on how these states can affect their fetuses and the different assessments - including ultrasound,T-ACE, triple screen genetics test, fetal kick count, non-stress test - are used to evaluate the babies' well-being. In addition, the diagnostic process for pre-eclampsia, HELLP Syndrome, and eclampsia are explored. 17 minutes

LABOR AND DELIVERY: Part 1
Two of the women previously introduced are ready to have their babies. Because of their pre-existing conditions and complications associated with their pregnancies, each will have a different childbirth experience. "High Risk OB" will explore some of their challenges including a discussion about weighing the risks of premature delivery versus continuing a tenuous pregnancy as well as the use of medications to induce labor. In addition, the choice of cesarean section or vaginal delivery, based on the clinical state of both the mother and fetus, will be addressed as will pain control techniques for each. 11 minutes

LABOR AND DELIVERY: Part 2
Two women previously introduced are ready to have their babies. "High Risk OB" will discuss the use of medications to slow down labor as well as those given to the mother if premature birth is imminent. In addition, the choice of cesarean section or vaginal delivery, based on the clinical state of both the mother and fetus, will be addressed. Furthermore, there will be a description of the various tracings on an electronic fetal monitor with emphasis on their identification, causes, and significance. 17 minutes
