CAREER COUNSELING WITH CHILDREN: Live Demonstrations
Dr. Adam Zagelbaum, Sonoma State University, skillfully and sensitively counsels two preteen children in individual counseling sessions. Students will learn that children can understand and work with basic career constructs if age-appropriate methods are used. Children are being asked to consider career matters at an increasingly younger age and effective counseling here can help them stay in school. Students will be able to master the Creative Career Constellation approach and see how it relates to cross-cultural, age, gender, and other sociocultural issues.

"Adam Zagelbaum's Career Counseling with Children is an excellent learning tool for all counselors who work with children. The "metal mapping" approach Dr. Zagelbaum uses is particularly well-suited for school counselors who approach their work with the ASCA National Model, as Zagelbaum integrates childrens' personal/social, career and academic development along with the teaching of critical thinking. The Creative Career Constellation approach offers children tools to extrapolate from their interests to relevant career domains.
In 2 live demonstration vignettes, Zagelbaum skillfully helps each of his two pre-teen clients develop an ability to envision themselves as productive adults in society. He also helps them understand the world of work as well as the interrelation between interests, skill-development and career success. The vignettes, combined with introductions and then debriefings from Zagelbaum, make for an excellent training tool.
"I plan to use this DVD in our department, and highly recommend it to all counselors who serve children from a developmental perspective."
