The most notable expedition in U.S. history was led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, with soldiers, a Shoshone woman named Sacagawea as interpreter, her husband Toussaint Charbonneau a French Canadian guide/boatmen, and York, an African-American slave. Ken Burns' LEWIS & CLARK re-creates the 1803 journey to locate the Northwest Passage that ended up on the Pacific coast in what is now Washington State. The explorers found a varied landscape and a dizzying diversity of Indian peoples.
