ASSESSING THE ELDERLY SERIES (5 Programs)

One of the most significant issues of today and into the future is the aging of our citizens. Healthcare professionals must be able to differentiate between the normal aging process and signs and symptoms which are pathologic. This five-part series begins with an overview of normal physiologic changes and then continues by presenting the major components of a multi-dimensional assessment of older adults. Also available as individual programs.

NORMAL PHYSIOLOGIC CHANGES
Explores the major physiologic changes that impact health assessment in the elderly and discusses special considerations that may affect or require adjustments in health assessment techniques. 23 minutes

PHYSICAL ASSESSMENT, Part One
Demonstrates with live male and female models, using a body system approach, a head-to-toe physical examination of an elderly patient, noting major differences between findings in the normal elderly and those of the normal adult. Introduces the exam and follows a patient through the general survey, and head and neck examination. Cardiac and respiratory examinations conclude this program. 28 minutes

PHYSICAL ASSESSMENT, Part Two
Continues the head-to-toe physical examination of Part 1 beginning with examination of the breast, abdomen, and female genitalia. Reintroduces the male for examination of the neuromuscular system, and concludes with examination of the genitalia and rectum.

FUNCTIONAL ASSESSMENT
Explores how well the elderly person functions in the environment, focusing on the demands of daily living in terms of activities, and formal and informal support systems.
