TANK MAN (THE): Tiananmen Square and China's Economic Miracle

On June 5, 1989, one day after Chinese troops expelled thousands of demonstrators from Tiananmen Square, a solitary, unarmed protester stood his ground before a column of tanks advancing down the Avenue of Eternal Peace. Captured by Western photographers, this extraordinary confrontation became an icon of the fight for freedom around the world. Filmmaker Antony Thomas investigates the identity, fate, and significance of the tank man. Barbara Walters asks the Chinese President right out if he had been executed? Imprisoned? Didn’t really get an answer.
Is this ancient history? Water under the bridge? Perhaps not...
Viewers learn some background details of how Tiananmen Square and the tank man ties in with the Chinese economic miracle and the urbanization that feeds it, their restrictive democracy and U.S. corporate complicity in helping them maintain the iron fist even if it is in the velvet glove of prosperity (for some).
