QUEER THEORY 2

Drs. Tilsen and Nylund illustrate the clinical application of queer theory. Queer theory, a set of ideas that challenge notions of fixed gender identity categories, can be useful in helping clients unpack taken-for-granted ideas about sex and gender. Dr. Nylund uses a queer theory-informed practice to aid Zach, 17, and his mother Gina, to recount and bear witness to his journey of self-acceptance and bravery as a gay young man.

Dave Nylund joins Julie and Tighearnan with reflections on homophobic bullying in school. This harassment has exceedingly harmful effects on identity along with jeopardizing personal safety. After five years of counseling support Zach and his mother meet with Dave to share his personal triumphs and poise in the face of heterosexism at a mainstream highschool. Gina's support of Zach while he has faced such oppression serves as an inspirational model for parents of queer-identified youth.
