GUNS AT SCHOOL (Real Life Teens)

Do Students feel SAFE at school? Are schools safe from GUN violence?

The past decade has repeatedly shown us that student violence does not discriminate against any school regardless of wealth, location, size, or resources. Prevention is key. Educators who install prevention measures, encourage student communication along with a continuous improvement of organizational health and guidance will help to create a safe learning school environment free from violence.

Gun violence is a growing problem among teens. One of the most frightening trends over the last several years has been the rise of gun-related violence at schools. Over 5% of high school students indicated that they have carried a gun to school and it is estimated that approximately one million children will bring a gun to school each year.
A number of reasons have been cited for the emergence of this disturbing phenomenon. Some of these include the widespread availability of guns, escalating levels of violence in video games and media violence and rising levels of teen alienation and rage. Many students who carry guns do so because they are afraid or influenced by peer pressure.

This program discusses the causes of violence in schools, gun control and what can be done to keep students and faculty safe at school. It explores how teens really feel about gun related violence, what they think of teachers being armed, the causes of violence on campus and the warning characteristics of a school shooter.

Licensed Clinical Counselor, Tom Danis, M.Ed. discusses the causes of violence at school including bullying, peer pressure, emotional and physical abuse and how to recognize and address the warning signs that a student is displaying violent tendencies and could be in need of immediate help.

It interviews students about this tragic yet reoccurring problem facing teens today. Along with clinical perspectives from teen psychological counselor, teens speak honestly and candidly about how guns and violence impact their lives both in school and within their community.
