SEEKERS SERIES (13 Programs)

Native... North American Indian... First Nations... Aboriginal...This is a series of thirteen 24-minute programs by, for, and about the youth... addresses questions and problems... offers answers and considered opinions and solutions on things from education to teen pregnancy to jobs to substance abuse to heritage and so much more!!

1. THE CULTURE SHOW - What is native culture? Show segments include:
Commentary about history, Reality TV and Champlain; Profile of Hutch Sitting Eagle, Grass Dancer from the Siksika Nation in Alberta; and, aCelebration piece. This is the Seekers, and We are Aboriginal. Turtle Island does not have borders. We did not cross the Bering Strait. And we are not a conquered people.
This is the Seekers, AND WE ARE ABORIGINAL.

2. THE WARRIORS SHOW - Warrior. Strong word. What does the word warrior mean? How did Sitting Bull see it?
Show segments include: Profile of the Department of National Defence Aboriginal Pre-Recruitment Training program; Exploration of the range of opportunities and options provided within the military-trades, education, leadership, team building, peacekeeping, travel; Salute to veterans and Aboriginal military heroes and their proud tradition of service; and, News Desk features everything from Tommy Prince to Chief Tecumseh to Adam Beach

3. THE JOBS SHOW - Tired of the revolving door syndrome and still no job? Maybe you don't understand the rules. This show looks at Employment and Employability. Segments include: Becoming the CEO of your own Company-Me Inc; News Desk features options like work experience, co-op, internships, exchanges, and international programs as well as current statistics and job trends; and Information about job search-resumes and interviews, how to package and sell yourself, making the most of your background.

4. THE JUSTICE SHOW - What is Justice? There are many approaches to justice and many paths to moral rightness, equity, honour, fairness, the law and its administration. Show segments include: First Nations Tribal Justice Institute-young people training to become tribal police-their dreams and visions for helping themselves, their people and their communities; Restorative justice and alternative disputes resolution; News Desk features some innovations and changes in programming and approach to justice; and, Troubling statistics on Aboriginal peoples and the Justice system.

5. THE COMMUNITY SHOW - We talk about our communities. The government studies our communities. Stats Can tracks our communities. The media write about our communities. People form opinions about our communities. But what is community? Show segments include: The M.A.D. Group (Making Adult Decisions), Mohawk Nation, Kahnawake-young people who work together to help their community and along the way discover a lot about themselves; The News Desk looks at a wide variety of strong community initiatives from across the country.

6. THE PREGNANCY AND PARENTING SHOW - So. I'm pregnant. What now? Am I really ready for this? What about him? Is he ready for this? Are we ready for this? How solid is our relationship? Maybe I should look at options. Show segments include: Profile of the Adolescent Parent Centre in Winnipeg, MB; Sex has consequences; Is the deck stacked against young parents? News Desk includes extensive resource listing on pregnancy, parenting, STD's, Help Lines; and, The Couch Potatoes take a quiz on Pregnancy and Parenting.

7. THE EDUCATION SHOW - Education is more than university degrees and letters after your name. It is an ongoing process that lasts all of your life. Show segments include: Joe Duquette High School, Saskatoon, SK-a unique school for Native youth that combines Native culture, music, art, and drama to help teens find their way

8. THE MENTAL HEALTH SHOW - This show examines issues of self-esteem, depression and suicide and considers ways to heal and work towards positive mental health. Show segments include: Suicide deaths accounted for nearly one-third of all deaths among Aboriginal youth. For every suicide, there are 50 to 100 attempts; Profiles a young drug and alcohol counsellor, Agnes Fabian, Dene Nation; Strength and courage; Specific ways to help someone who is depressed and/or suicidal; and, News Desk includes extensive resource listing for help with personal and mental health issues.

9. THE EXPLORERS SHOW - Exploring the world. Exploring the past. Exploring spirituality. Exploring opportunity. Exploring yourself. Show segments include: Profile of Derek Sock, US Marine Corps, Mi'kmaq Nation, Big Cove, NB; A special version of a Creation Story; The conflict of the inner voices-fear and courage. The show deals with taking risks and overcoming fear and finding the courage to make a move, learning lessons and bringing the lessons home; News Desk features historical and contemporary explorers.

10. FINDING YOUR PLACE, LEARNING THE LESSONS - It is about who you are. It's not about what someone else thinks about you. It's about belonging. It's about art, music, storytelling, dance. It's about the land and about respect.
It's about knowing yourself and finding your place. Show segments include: Interview with Adam Beach; Perspectives from a variety of world Indigenous peoples; News Desk features the growing awareness and activism about the rights of world Indigenous peoples and the movement towards ancestral values; and, Making contributions-Leonard Peltier and Rigoberta Menchu

11. LIVING THE CULTURE - Combining traditional culture and knowledge with modern ways and realities. Show segments include: Profile of Isaac Day, Ojibway Nation, a young man who is getting in touch with his culture, and moving forward with his life.; News desk celebrates Aboriginal leaders in fashion, business, web design, travel and tourism; and, The Couch Potatoes live the culture.

12. MYTHS AND STEREOTYPES - This show looks at stereotypes (movies, music, sports mascots, etc.) from a satirical, historical and contemporary perspective, through sketches, commentaries, montage of stock footage and archival images. Show segments include: Myths and stereotypes; Team mascots; Interview with Adam Beach; Why Indian mascots and logos are offensive; and, The Couch Potatoes explore myths and stereotypes.

13. THE WAYS OF KNOWING - You know how the Elders are always going on about know who you are? This episode looks at "Ways of Knowing" ... ways of looking at who you really are ... the many ways you're smart ... the many ways you have value ... the many things you bring from your people, and to the world. Show segments include: Viewing Aboriginal people in terms of multiple intelligences or ways of knowing-Body, Image, Logic, Music, Nature, People, Self, and Word; and, A celebration of the con.
