Kids can be cruel. Starting a rumor or creating gossip to get back at someone for a slight, whether real or imagined, is pretty common. Unfortunately, kids are also often hyper-sensitive and smear campaigns can devastate them. Even calling someone names or branding them with a mean epithet can cause them to withdraw outside of the group. And of course bullying has had many tragic consequences documented.
